Investor: An Opportunity to Collect a Concours Winning Saloon
1974 CLASSIC MERCEDES-BENZ 230 SALOON
Once upon a time, our own Sales Director stumbled upon this 230/4 Saloon. At the time it was to be announced as the winner of a local Mercedes-Benz Owner Club concours competition. This was over fifteen years ago – not long before SLSHOP started. Bruce recalls how impressed he was by the calibre of this vehicle.
Penned by the infamous Freidrich Geiger, this 4-cylinder 230 saloon (W115) arrived in 1974. They continued to produce this model until 1976. This was a period when German luxury saloons were not a common acquaintance on British roads – the average member of the public would have been enjoying something flimsy from British Leyland… Despite a short production run, they produced over 60,000 of them; very few destined for the UK. Most in Europe ended up on German roads in taxi configuration.
This saloon is particularly special due to its rich history of care. Since new, it has only covered 33,457 having been in the ownership of the current owner for [years]. In their ownership, the car has been a focus of meticulous mindfulness. For most, the sheer objective is preserving this saloon in as original condition as possible.
The car was Ziebart treated from new – a form of rust protection. However, the owner also elected to have the vehicle Waxoyld for added protection from the elements. The presence of a second spare wheel confirms the level of dedication to originality. The documentation is in fantastic order, with a service booklet carefully detailing every service of past 49 years.
A manual gearbox and absence of power-steering makes for a very rare saloon. It’s a solid starting point for an enthusiast or collector looking to build a personal collection of rare Mercedes icons.
A Classic Mercedes Daily Driver
1989 MERCEDES-BENZ 420SL (R107)
SLSHOP has had an intimate relationship with this 420 SL over the years. The vehicle was in the long-term ownership of a lady based in Worcester. It resided here for a considerable amount of time before arriving at our door. At this point, an esteemed BBC radio 1 presenter approached SLSHOP with interest in acquiring an R107 SL. After falling in love with this classic Mercedes Petrol Blue 420 SL, SLSHOP set about readying the car for their use.
We subjected this 420 SL to our renowned Bulkhead Restoration process. It isn’t easy to carry out. But it’s the difference between an R107 SL heading for the scrapyard and one that can carry on for another half-century. During the current owner’s possession, they commissioned us to refine the stance and aesthetic with SportLine enhancements. The purists may object, but the lowered ride gives the 420 SL a distinct presence on the road. Something that stands out from the crowd. .
Inside, the leather has been re-trimmed. Our dedicated R107 classic Mercedes workshop has tended to all the mechanicals. The high mileage is nothing concerning. The 420 SL’s M116E42 is an extremely dependable unit and will persevere at your command. With the correct maintenance, this is a 420 SL that wants for nothing.
In its current form, this is a beautiful daily driver to share with the world. Those with bigger visions could take the SportLine setup further and opt for engine enhancements.
For the Aspiring Endurance Rally Driver:
Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda Astral Silver
A 52-year-old classic Mercedes 280 SL Pagoda becomes more desirable worldwide. Values exceed six figures in most cases. Of course, this depends on its specification, cosmetic, mechanical, and structural integrity. Finding one that ticks all the boxes can be difficult. SLSHOP aims to tick as many of these boxes as possible.
Our sales team selected the 280 SL you see here due to its rich history. With an international career serving a select few owners, it graced the roads of two different continents. Ordered new to sunny La Jolla, San Diego, California, the 280 SL remained in the family until the millennium. From here, E-type UK acquired the car, and sold it to its current owner, Mr Smith. He commissioned classic Mercedes specialist Roger Edwards to complete an extensive amount of mechanical work.
Once the car was up and running again, Mr Smith moved to Prague. Here, the car spent a year and a half with a local Mercedes specialist. He had the car resprayed, as well as a retrim of the interior. This changed the colour from Horizon Blue to Astral Silver with a Red interior. Since its completion in 2015, Mr Smith has embarked on multiple endurance rallies. These include the Geneva – Cannes Classic Rally and the Rallye de Paris. He reports that the Pagoda has been the most reliable car in his possession. He’s confident that the new owner will thoroughly enjoy his investment in the 280 SL’s mechanical and cosmetic standard.
A Pagoda priced at this level is an unmissable opportunity for an enthusiast to obtain the most desirable of the W113 Pagoda models. This is particularly true as the car holds low mileage and received all the necessary attention from the existing owner. This is a hassle-free Pagoda ready to be enjoyed.
For the Classic Mercedes Grand Tourer
1988 Mercedes-Benz 420sl (R107)
A 420 SL offers the raw experience of the Mercedes-Benz V8 but in a slightly more refined format. It offers you a smoother ride throughout the rev range. Also, it has more subtle muscle flaunting than full-on guns out for the show as with the 500 SL. All the essential power to propel you across the UK or the continent.
Likewise, the 420 SL offers a range of standard features. These include Limited Slip Differential, cruise control and headlamp wash wipe. These were expensive options back in the day. With optional rear seats and outside temperature gauge, they’re essential mod-cons for grand tours.
In its current low mileage and well-cared for form, it’s a striking opportunity. This is an almost new R107 SL, finished in the flawless and understated Blue-Black Metallic with Grey Leather and Hard Top. This colour configuration transcends generations! It also enhances the repetitive landscape of our modern roads.
