HERITAGE MERCEDES MANUAL GEARBOX CONVERSION
Mercedes-Benz models from the fifties and sixties typically featured a range of four-speed automatic and manual transmissions, with 5-speed transmissions coming into the fold in the late 1960s. Many of these models were built for refined motorway cruising, rather than fast-paced competitive environments where all scope of the rev range could be engaged.
Over the years we’ve established the perfect compatibility of gearboxes for an array of different classic Mercedes models. These span from rare ZF 5-speed gearboxes to uprated modern five and six-speed gearboxes to both improve cruising and make driving more engaging.
WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER A MANUAL GEARBOX CONVERSION?
There are various circumstances where you may find yourselves looking for a manual gearbox:
- Motorway cruising: The older four-speed transmissions will rev much higher at 65 – 70 mph, which can be more intrusive for occupants. A five or even six-manual gearbox will allow you to cruise at these speeds at lower revs.
- Competition and Motorsport: A manual gearbox offers a more engaging driving experience and allows you to have more command over the output of your engine. This ultimately improves the handling and performance of the vehicle, also putting less stress on the engine and kick-down.
WHAT WILL IT DO FOR THE CAR?
Choosing to upgrade your gearbox to either a five or six-speed transmission will transform the driving experience, extending the rev-range, offering more control over power output and enable less stress on the engine when cruising at higher speeds. In addition, it will give your vehicle a character unlike any others. With a modern five or six speed transmission, the vehicle’s character will be more akin to a sports car and is the perfect starting point to make further modifications to the performance and handling.
An uprated gearbox with either five or six gears will radically improve the driving experience by extending the rev-range, while simultaneously offering more control over power output and prevent unnecessary stress on the engine at higher speeds. In addition, it will alter the character to that of a modern sports car and makes the perfect starting point for all-round SportLine build.
