Have you lost the paperwork for your classic Mercedes-Benz? Are you unsure if the colour is original to the vehicle? Perhaps you have been told the vehicle was repainted at some point in its life?
Fear not, each Mercedes-Benz vehicle is stamp with key details relating to the manufacture of your vehicle; with key Vehicle Identification Numbers located around the vehicle to identify it in the factory. The same goes for the colour of your vehicle, which is a key identity element that can be used to confirm the originality of your vehicle.
In this short guide we provide you with suggested locations for the key number that identifies the paint finish of your vehicle. For this exercise, we have focused specifically on SLs of the sixties, seventies and nineties but generally the location remains the same for saloons, coupes, estates and 4x4s.
PAINT CODE LOCATION – 1960S MERCEDES-BENZ MODELS
In this specific example we utilise a Mercedes-Benz W113 Pagoda to show you where you might find a 1960s data card. On the W113 Pagoda, you will find a dedicated metal plaque with the paint code and other data details stamped on the inside of the nearside front wing.
As you can see from this example, the 280SL Pagoda in question is painted in the colourway of Silver Grey DB180.

PAINT CODE LOCATION – 1970S/80S MERCEDES-BENZ MODELS
For this particular era of Mercedes-Benz, the paint code location has been moved to the front of the vehicle and is situated above the radiator on the metal crossbar. As you can see from the photo, the stamped plaque is the same format to the pervious era of Mercedes-Benz SL.
The vehicle in question here is an Astral Silver (735) R107 500SL.

PAINT CODE LOCATION – 1990S MERCEDES-BENZ MODELS
Once again, the location of the data card moved with the 1990s R129 SL to a more difficult to reach location. Opening up the R129’s bonnet, exactly where the grille and star would sit when the bonnet closed is where the you will find the data card hiding behind a black X shaped bar.
The example data card pictures is taken from a Sultan of Brunei 600SL which was originally made in Black (040) but has since been repainted in a non-BMW colour, hence the black and white photo.
