R107 Bulkhead Repair
R107 Bulkhead Repair: Damp carpets, water in the footwell, temperamental blower motor, unpredictable electrics… There’s no doubt that these are symptoms of a rusty bulkhead. Unfortunately, the well-documented Achilles heel of the R107 SL has ruined many cars. Even later galvanised cars are not immune, because the metal inside the bulkhead was not galvanised by the factory.
Over time, we’ve seen horror stories in our workshop. As a result, we know that there’s no quick fix for this particular ailment. Ultimately, there’s only one way to deal with the problem effectively. That is, a Mercedes Bulkhead Restoration. In this procedure, we remove the dashboard, heater components, wiring and insulation to access the bulkhead. Then, we cut out the corroded metal and refit brand new panels. Finally, we rust-proof everything.
Our R107 Bulkhead Repair work uses our very own bulkhead panels. Unlike other parts, this is exclusive to SLSHOP. Following years of dealing with rusted bulkheads, we developed it specially.
Finally, each bulkhead job we do comes fully photo documented. In addition, you’ll get a unique bulkhead certificate. Also, we’ll give you a sticker verifying that the work has been carried out to the highest standards by SLSHOP. See our video for more details.
Bulkhead Repair
As with any old car, the Mercedes-Benz R107 is prone to rust. Undoubtedly, it’s made to a better standard than many of its contemporary rivals. But the SL of the 1970s and 80s has some well-known weak spots. Chief of all is the dreaded bulkhead. Differing from others, our method is a comprehensive solution. As we developed it in-house over a number of years, we’ve tested it comprehensively. Along with this, it’s backed by an SLSHOP guarantee.

As our video shows… Even cars that look superb from the outside can hide a dark rusty secret within the bulkhead. Unfortunately, it’s not easy to inspect unless you know what you’re looking for. As the area is not structural, it’s unlikely to be picked up by an MOT test. For many, damp carpets and faulty electrics are the first signs of advanced bulkhead corrosion.
SLSHOP Craftsmanship
Ultimately, the quality of a finished piece lies in the strength of the craftsmanship throughout. Therefore, we apply the same detail to every aspect of your build and restoration. Not only does this include the final fitment of chrome, but everything from the way we bolt the seats to the paintwork. After all, with our years of experience, we know these cars well enough to understand how the little details fit the big picture.
