R129 SL UNDERBODY CHECK
The R129 SL is often referred to as the last over-engineered SLs to leave Stuttgart, but that doesn’t mean it is without its ailments. The underbody of your R129 SL is constantly exposed to highly corrosive particles every time you head out onto the road, and combine this with age, and you’re left with a concoction of potential problems.
WHERE DOES IT START?
Your R129 is most prone to corrosion at the rear section of the chassis structure and undercarriage. The rear axle conceals several hydraulic lines, actuators and brake lines. Often, the rear axle may look in good condition, but this can be concealing an extensive problem.
We have found that the undercarriage behind the axle will start to corrode, spreading to the rear sub-frame which includes the differential, brake lines and more, resulting in potentially hazardous and undriveable state.
HOW DO WE INSPECT YOUR UNDERBODY?
A vehicle health check will usually reveal signs of a corroded rear end, but in some cases the rear axle may need to be completely removed to confirm the extent of the problem. Your car will be inspected up close and personal in our workshops, looking for any signs of corrosion.
WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT THIS?
Following a vehicle health check, our team will remove the sub-frame, rusty control arms, suspension and differential, which will all be replaced or refurbished where new alternatives aren’t available. The sub-frame, differential casing and wheel hubs will then all be sandblasted, and powder coated for added protection, while the undercarriage surface rust will be removed to return it to bare metal before priming and sealing.
Our prevention methods don’t just stop at the rear. Once you have had your rear axle rebuilt and surface rust removed, we will begin a program of anti-rust protection, coating the whole undercarriage to ensure it is protected better than when new.
WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER AN UNDERBODY CHECK?
Knowledge is power. Understanding the state of your R129’s underbody condition will allow you to either take steps to rectify problems or part ways with the vehicle. Whatever your position, we will work with you according to your budget and needs to help you make the right decision for your future.
