At SLSHOP, we are fortunate enough to have a committed community of enthusiasts who repeatedly knock on our door year after year for support with their vehicles. The Mercedes 300SL Convertible discussed here is a fine example of a vehicle that the owner cherishes; so much so that he has commissioned us to carry out further Sportline modifications to his unique R107 SL.
Towards the end of 2021 we introduced you to this Signal Red Mercedes 300SL convertible as part of a line-up of cars that we had commissioned to swap out the automatic gearboxes in favour of modern manual transmissions. The work didn’t stop here though, due to various issues with the original six-cylinder engine, we sourced and updated a W124 3.0 6-cylinder 103 engines from the 300TE model. This was selected for its larger camshaft which offers better compression, more aggressive fuel delivery and thus a better combustion process.
Now just a year later, the owner has decided to go the extra mile with modifying his late R107 300SL convertible.

Modifying the 300SL Mercedes Further
Mercedes 300SL Convertible Mechanicals:
The 300SL was never bestowed with a Limited Slip Differential from factory, with only the higher powered V8 models receiving this treatment. With the help of our Journal blog and social media channels, and with the specific brief ‘’to be able to do donuts’’, the owner has commissioned us to fit our selected Quaife ATB unit, which our team certified as the most suitable upgrade for their Mercedes 300SL Convertible.
The Quaife ATB differs from other plate-based systems, as it doesn’t feature springs, ramps or other components that require servicing at specific intervals. The Quaife system is therefore much more robust and durable; it also accepts standard transmission oils.
Handling:
In addition to this, we’re fitting uprated rear anti-roll bars to match the front (which was fitted at the same time as the manual gearbox), achieving even more precise handling akin to that of a modern performance car. Part of the works commissioned was to fit new brakes and with the extent of upgrades already in place, it was deemed only right to fit SportLine brakes. Vented discs and uprated pads will be fitted, as well as new calipers finished in gold.
Protecting the 300SL Mercedes Convertible:
With the profile of 300SL significantly lower than a standard example, it was deemed necessary to fit a stainless-steel skid plate to protect the custom exhaust system previously fitted at the same time as the manual gearbox. Works to the undercarriage concluded with the masking up of the upper body in order to carry out a chemical clean down underneath, before applying Waxoyl to treat and protect the undercarriage and all suspension components.
Inside:
On the inside, an outside temperature gauge has been fitted in the centre of the dash where this option would have been incorporated at the factory. We’ve also carried out a modification to the heater slider controls, as well as replacing a multitude of seals around the windows and soft top.
In summary, this is a fine machine and one of very Mercedes 300SL convertibles in the UK with such modifications applied.
