With so many cars to choose from, how can you possibly pick a Top 5? Here’s 4 of the finest, with a little detail on what makes them so special. For this selection, we have gone with a Red and Silver theme, bright colours underneath grey February skies – let’s hope that Spring begins to spring by the time you are reading this!
The Late 500
1987 Mercedes-Benz 500SL (R107)
Astral Silver (735) with Royal Blue Leather (272)
The Mercedes-Benz R107 SL was built from 1971 to 1989, with a major facelift and update taking place in 1986. With improved handling thanks to wider wheels, uprated suspension and a revised interior, these ‘late’ cars have always commanded a premium in the classic Mercedes-Benz marketplace.
For these last three years of production, buyers had a choice of 300SL, 420SL or 500SL, with the range topping 5.0 litre V8 naturally being the most desirable of all. Although our showroom might host some 60 available SLs, distilling the selection down to just the post-86 500SLs leaves only two current options. A rare Pine Green SL, and the Astral Silver car shown here.
This beautiful Astral Silver car is perfectly complimented by the dark blue leather. It shows just 45,000 miles and has been known to SLSHOP for almost a decade, returning now to be sold by us for the second time in the last 10 years.
A superb way to get into one of the finest R107 SLs of all, the ‘late 500’.

The Iconic Red 300
1988 Mercedes-Benz 300SL (R107)
Signal Red (568) with Black Fabric (071)
In the world of the late model R107, the polar opposite of an understated silver V8 with leather has to be a brightly coloured six-cylinder with fabric – and they don’t come much more vivid than aptly named Signal Red.
Over the last year we have seen a dozen Signal Red cars, but really had to rack our brains to recall the last time we hosted an SL in red with Black Fabric. The contrast between the inside and outside of this car works perfectly, a beautifully classic aesthetic. With just 29,000 miles on the clock, this one is barely worn in – the interior is hardly used.
Although Signal Red might be a very prominent colour in the R107 SL market, this car is a rare find indeed.

The UK California 250SL – rarest of all Pagodas?
1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL ‘California’ Pagoda (W113)
Signal Red with Beige Leather
It’s been a little while since we hosted a Pagoda in Signal Red, despite seeing so many R107s in this very popular colour. Adding this car to the offering seemed entirely fitting, especially as we published our explanation of R107 paint colours and discussed the popularity of Signal Red in this article earlier in the week.
What makes this Pagoda so interesting is the fact that it’s a California Coupe, being fitted with a fold up bench seat instead of the retractable soft top. It’s also a 250SL, the rarest of all Pagodas, and an original UK car. When you distill the entire Pagoda range down to model specifics, there really cannot be many Right Hand Drive, UK ordered 250SL California Coupes at all.
Even more interesting is the service history that’s present with the car. The first owner racked up an impressive 54,000 miles between 1967 and 1971, all verified in a green service book that carefully documents the first few years of the car’s active life.
A beautiful car to look and and to drive, incredibly rare, unusual and now available to buy.

The 280SL Auto – Still the king
1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Automatic Pagoda
Silver with Navy Blue Leather and Blue Fabric Soft top
The second Pagoda we have to showcase this week is also a very special car. We won’t dwell on the fact that it’s a 280SL Auto ordered new in the UK, the fact that these cars still hog the limelight in the Pagoda market is already well documented.
Subject to a very high quality restoration some 15 years ago, it sits like a jewel in the crown of our showroom. Time has been extremely kind to this car – you’d never guess that the work was carried out a decade and a half ago. Not only was the work done to a very high standard, but everything is documented within the file that’s present with the car.
You can read more about this car on our website, but the key thing that we really love about this SL is the fact that it has attended so many shows in recent years. Within the paperwork we find stubs and receipts for a great many classic car shows, steam rallies and events, evidence of a very well used and well loved car – but it’s also a show queen, indeed a show winner.
One to be used and adored, polished and displayed in equal measure. The quintessential Pagoda that owners seek.
