The Colours of Perfection
Launched in 1989 as a replacement to the global superstar R107, the R129 SL arrived on the scene at a new juncture in history. Technology was rapidly improving across all industries – the internet was on the horizon and household computers were almost becoming attainable. Within the automotive sector, OEMs were racing against time to be the leaders in driver assisted tech and safety features. Enter the R129 SL.
Available in an array of different engine variants and with a whole host of unique leading technology, the R129 SL was remarkable in every way. So much so, that It’s designer Bruno Sacco labelled it his ‘most perfect car’ meaning that the accompanying colourways had to be fit for a new automotive king.
The new era of convertible motoring marked a change in new colourways offered by Mercedes-Benz. Gone were the majority conservative colours of the eighties, enter the vibrant palates that would symbolise the last decade of the century and a new era of driving.
Below you will find a list of all 72 colours offered for those that had the fiscal power to order a new R129 SL. This list encompasses all ‘Designo’, ‘Metallic’ and ‘Solid’ colours.

We may never know the answer, but this could have been in response to people’s tastes or Mercedes-Benz wanted to actually direct trends themselves. With over 200,000 R129 SLs produced, it is not wonder that we saw colours come and go with demand and fluctuating sales.
