It was great to be amongst fellow petrolheads again at Bicester Heritage’s first Saturday scramble. The spirit of a scramble isn’t easy to match – pure openness to conversation and reciprocal admiration for man’s greatest creation. Whether you’re floating around in your father’s old MG BGT or pop and crackling in your brutish Firebird, there’s no questioning that anything goes in the Scramble world. Of course, the Caffeine and Machine motto, ‘don’t be a dick’ still rings true.
For those of you who are not familiar with Bicester Heritage, the former RAF base is a heritage enterprise cluster flanking much of Oxford’s urban activity. From vintage vehicle upholsterers and fabrication experts to the Wriggling Monkey Brewery, each business is innately mechanical. The plethora of skills here are exceptional and fortunately, the increasing number of apprenticeships offered by these businesses secures a future for many classic vehicles, bikes, and planes.
We took a wander around the site to connect with other owners and distribute our printed Journal, leaving as many on windscreens as possible. Highlights from the day included the W126 500SE AMG – one of two cars in the UK and supposedly owned by the Beatles’ George Harrison. Other highlights included the 280 SL Pagoda with the number plate designation, 113 YUM – acknowledgement that this is a tasty classic car indeed.
For those of you who were unable to make it to this event, SLSHOP will be embarking on a number of Petrolhead Pilgrimages to automotive destinations around the country this summer. These pilgrimages will be primarily for members but anyone is welcome with a Mercedes-Benz. Find out more by visiting our Membership page.
