2021 HIGHLIGHTS
1. #SLSHOP50 – RECORD BROOKLANDS DRIVE
The largest gathering of R107 SLs on the continent and possibly in the world. Starting at our head office, SLSHOP welcomed owners from all over the UK onto our grounds before driving in convoy to Mercedes-Benz World, Brooklands. It was here that the iconic 50th-anniversary shot as seen in Classic Mercedes Magazine was taken.
2. EPIC RESTORATION: THE FINEST 420 SL ON THE PLANET
Appearing on the front cover of Classic Car Magazine earlier this year is one of SLSHOP’s many internationally acclaimed full restorations. Over the course of 12 months, we revived an already rare 420 SL from the ground up, which was carefully documented by one of the largest international classic car publications. This car is now on the market for an enthusiast to enjoy and cherish for another fifty years.
3. SLSHOP RESTORED R107 300 SL AT MERCEDES-BENZ WORLD
As the world’s leading SL specialist, Mercedes-Benz World approached SLSHOP for a podium piece for display in the centre of the building. Naturally, we obliged and offered this exceptional 300SL in Signal Red. You can read more about this here.
4. SLSHOP WORKSHOPS: PROJECT MIKKOLA
At the start of 2021, petrolheads Phil and Kieron approached SLSHOP with a vision for an open-top road and rough terrain rally car. The workshop roared in excitement as the green light for Project Mikkola illuminated. The 450SL features a completely bespoke roll cage built by Tom, a new 5-speed manual gearbox, Limited-Slip Differential, uprated brakes and suspension, revised injection system and a lightened flywheel, to name just a few of the improvements.
5. PARTS STORE PRODUCT EXPANSION
As part of our commitment to supporting owners of all classic and modern classic Mercedes-Benz models around the world, 2021 saw us commence the expansion of our product range to include R129 and W121 models. This has been alongside a new website platform with new navigation and search capabilities for the purposes of improved customer experience.
6. WALES TOUR
Despite the national fuel crisis, 11 couples and their cars joined SLSHOP’s directors for a tour of Wales spanning over 500 miles. A joyous trip that saw each couple make the most of their car in the beautiful setting of Wales’ rolling hills.
7. A SPECIAL ENDORSEMENT
We’ve been restoring W113 Pagodas for nearly ten years now, with each build gaining attention from enthusiasts and journalists around the world. This 280 SL – WOT 427H – was found in a barn in Somerset and selected for a bespoke restoration for a customer based in South Africa. When driven by Classic Mercedes Magazine Editor, David Sutherland, he proclaimed, ‘’I’ve driven possibly the best Mercedes Pagoda I’ve ever come across, a late 280SL restored by SLSHOP.’’
8. A TRIO OF EXCEPTIONALLY RESTORED CARS
2021 saw a new relationship germinate between SLSHOP and Kienle Automobiltechnik GmbH in Germany – a renowned classic Mercedes-Benz restoration specialist. Kienle approached SLSHOP with a proposition – to sell a trio of fully restored iconic Mercedes, all finished in the same combination of Astral Silver and Blue MB Tex.
9. CONCOURS WINNING 300 SL AT NEC CLASSIC MOTOR SHOW
Purchased from SLSHOP in 2017, this Signal Red 300 SL was refined by Barry and Jackie Sidwell over the course of 3 years with the goal of winning the concours Masterclass. With SLSHOP’s support, the car was took podium position in the summer of 2021 and was selected by Meguiar’s UK to be displayed on their stand at the NEC Classic Motor Show.
10. THE DRIVENCHAT PODCAST
With over 100,000 monthly petrolhead listeners and a portfolio of high-profile and influential automotive figures, SLSHOP was delighted to be asked to be featured on the DrivenChat Podcast. Managing Director, Sam Bailey talks all things classic German sports cars, the future of motoring and how to really practice mindfulness.
11. THE 1971 R107 SL ART CAR
Taking inspiration from the Paul Smith classic Rover Mini, we wrapped an early R107 350SL from 1971 in a quirky seventies geometric-stye colour scheme, urging onlookers to get their groove on when catching a glimpse. This promo car was a bold statement to engrave the 50th anniversary of the R107 SL in people’s minds. The car led the convoy of R107s from SLSHOP to Mercedes-Benz World in July for our #SLSHOP50 event.
