The Golden Age of Motorsport
Returning for the company’s second instalment of Goodwood Revival, SLSHOP took up position Over the Road for three days of vintage va-va-voom at the Glastonbury of motoring events. After a busy 2020 in Stratford-Upon-Avon, the chance to get out and embrace the sights, sounds and smells of the golden age of motorsport, whilst also connect with existing and newly converted enthusiasts, was not to be missed.
‘’Nostalgia: A sentimental longing or a wistful affection for a period in the past’’
Take a trip to West Sussex in mid-September and you’ll struggle not to notice the petrolheads lingering around the towns, on the roads and in the local bars and restaurants. Head to the Goodwood Estate and you’ll start in a car park full of an eclectic range of new and old vehicles – highlights for the team were this 300SL Gullwing. Not something you’d usually find parked in a field anywhere in the world.
On-site, you’ll find yourself transported back in time, where tweed caps, silk scarves and Rockabilly dresses are daily gowns. Your sense of time is easily lost when integrated into the Goodwood crowd. You’ll be certain you’ve walked past Sophia Loren or Marilyn Munroe every five minutes. The party starts early, with a vintage affair at any one of the bars and music tents located across the 12,000-acre site, which is home to a 2.4-mile-long circuit and an aerodrome.
The circuit grid mainly comprises cars originally raced in the period 1948 – 1966, except for Grand Prix and Voiturette cars that raced in the period from 1931 to 1950, and post-vintage sports cars. Each race over the weekend intends to celebrate and recreate the action from several period races. On the field, you’ll also find aviation greats from the same period. If you can’t find a place as a spectator, you can watch the action from one of the many screens located around the event, or stream online.
The organisers, drivers, staff that work on-site, enthusiasts who attend year after year, are not merely drawn to the occasion out of nostalgia. These people live and breathe the present and past of motorsport – as if they sprinkle burnt tyre over their dinner or enjoy a glass of ethanol over lunch. The investment in not only organising, but also attending an occasion like Goodwood Revival is immense – enthusiasts know the drivers, the circuit, the cars, and their capabilities. They also know how important It is to share knowledge at events like these, by bringing along their children, grandchildren, and partners.
Highlights
Highlights of the event Included the tribute to Sir Stirling Moss. This was the first Goodwood Revival to take place without motorsport hero Moss, who debuted in first place at the circuit back in the 1950s. Since his passing, the organisers have renamed the opening race – Kinrara Trophy – the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy, keeping his memory and nickname ‘Mr Goodwood’ alive for generations to come.
The Duke of Richmond gave an emotional speech about the man, and a parade of his most renowned vehicles, including the Mercedes 300SLR in which he won the 1955 Mille Miglia. To date, this achievement hasn’t been topped, as no one has managed to maintain a pace of 98mph along a 993-mile route through Italy. Moss reached speeds of 170mph at points during this race, in the mid-1950s… Not something to be overlooked. The infamous vehicle is now off to the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart to be preserved for onlookers. The 21st Century won’t know a character or driver like Moss.

Over the Road
Back amongst the hustle of jive dancing, SLSHOP welcomed enthusiasts onto their exhibition stand to exchange their passion for the SL variant, as well as classic Mercedes-Benz coupes and saloons. The team selected six cars to display throughout the weekend, positioning five on their stand and leaving an additional R107 SL by the entrance for passers-by to inspect.
Mercedes SL Restoration
To showcase our commitment to reviving classic Mercedes-Benz, we selected two very special W113 and R107 models for Goodwood Revival:
1988 300SL (R107)| Signal Red
Starting as a low mileage and well cared for R107 SL, we approached this build as we would any other. Despite the good overall condition of the car, every nut and bolt was removed and refreshed before the body was sandblasted ready for a complete repaint in the original Signal Red. This was a car that had never been apart, never welded, never
panelled. A superb car for an ‘as new’ build. It went on to be displayed at the Mercedes-Benz Museum, Brooklands as part of the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the R107 SL – a mark of a truly fine example. So much so that four Texans dressed like Bobby Ewing asked for a photo with her.
1971 280SL (W113) | Medium-Blue Metallic
The goal of the project was to create a perfect interpretation of the car in its original form, specified exactly as the gentleman would have ordered from the showroom when the car was available new. A meticulous restoration began with a methodical strip down, revealing the blue paintwork beneath the silver topcoat, and stripping back the layers even further to correctly prepare the car for the next stage of work. No part of this 280SL was untouched, it was a true bare shell rebuild with the engine removed to undergo its restoration; rebuilt meticulously in Norway on the request of the owner by a well-renowned engine specialist, also detailed in the photo file. Once the engine rebuild was complete, the painstaking task of putting the car back together could commence.
The final colour was Medium Blue Metallic (396), chosen to stay with the original look of the car when it was new but updated in metallic. Instead of the blue-on-blue scheme, the contrasting shades of parchment leather, carpets and headlining were chosen to give a luxurious yet period correct car, right down to the lightweight Mexican Hat wheels (introduced in 1969).
Flying the Flag of Originality:
1971 280SL (W113) | 49,000 Miles | Horizon Blue
This beautiful Pagoda looks superb in the factory correct shade of Horizon Blue, a non-metallic colour that suits the car perfectly. The first owner also opted for a contrasting roof, finished in Midnight Blue and matched to the painted hubcaps – an alternative to colour coding the trims to the body – or light ‘Mexican Hat’ alloy wheels.
Inside the luxurious blue scheme continues, with the beautifully restored interior making for a lovely place to sit. The car has been restored to an excellent standard. Prior to arriving at SLSHOP to be offered for sale, this car underwent a comprehensive detailing program, including a ceramic coating of the paintwork. This not only protects the paint, but seals it.
1987 300SL (R107) | 38,000 Miles | Nautical Blue
Between 1987 and 1998 the car covered just 37,000 miles, with 11 stamps in the service book including the pre-delivery inspection
stamp dated 21st July 1987. Through the 1990s and 2000s, the car was driven sparingly, eventually going into long-term storage in 2013 until 2019. Since 2019, the car has undergone minor cosmetic restoration, becoming available for sale through SLSHOP over the summer of 2021. Nautical Blue and Cream leather is a fine combination for one of the most luxurious classics out there.
1988 420SL (R107) | 32,000 Miles | Astral Silver
The Astral Silver paintwork contrasts the black fabric (or sports check) perfectly, this is not only a superbly well cared for car but one that looks simply wonderful. Astral Silver will always be a popular R107 SL colour, but we don’t recall seeing any that look quite so smart as this one. The choice of black fabric makes for a rare and striking combination.
SLSHOP is going to turn its hand to hosting more of their own events in 2022, with three open days arranged, as well as three trips and experiences across the UK and Europe lined up for owners. More information will be provided over the coming months about these trips and tours. If you’d like to join us for either event, simply email [email protected]
