Launched in 1971, the Mercedes-Benz R107 SL underwent a significant update in 1986. For the last three years of production, Mercedes-Benz introduced a new range of engines, an updated interior, revised suspension and better handling.
The 300SL straight six replaced the 280SL, whilst an all new 4.2 litre V8 known as the 420SL replaced the 380SL. The 500SL remained, having replaced the 450SL in 1980. New for the American market was the 560SL, the largest displacement SL designed to keep power outputs in line with European cars even with the highly restrictive emissions regulations predominately in California.
These ‘late’ cars have always commanded the highest prices in the market place, with Signal Red being at the top of the list for most buyers.
