At SLSHOP, we believe a classic Mercedes-Benz SL should be enjoyed. There can be no greater feeling than sitting behind the big wheel of an SL, gently wafting along the open road with the top down. Everything we do in our workshops and parts store is about more than just keeping these cars on the road, it’s about encouraging others to have the confidence to get out and drive.
A well prepared SL should be inviting, capable and dependable. In recent years we have hosted a number of events to entertain and inspire – we hope to see you and your SL at an SLHOP event very soon.
Mallory Park, the 560SL and the SportLine Launch
When it was time to launch the SportLine, SLSHOP took the opportunity to invite a number of friends and customers to Mallory Park. Spending the day at the famous racing circuit, we had a camera crew present to record the SportLine video and indulged in a little track day action with our 560SL. Taking it in turns to pilot the left hand drive Blue-Green SL around the track, it was an opportunity to experience an SL in a different sort of environment. Whilst the SportLine stormed the straights with the chase car documenting for our launch video, the 560SL quietly racked up lap after lap at the hands of various enthusiasts. A great way to make the most of a day with a race track!
Donington Park, the Ponton Race Car and Matilda Shakedown
SLSHOP followers will be familiar with Matilda, our 450SL race car. Built by the talented team of experts at SLSHOP, ‘Matilda’ took the lessons learnt with the SportLine project and upped the ante. This aggressive looking SL has competed in a number of historic events, taking to the track alongside the more usual array of classics from the likes of Porsche and Ford. The 4.5 litre V8 is a mighty unit for a racing car to utilise, but despite the weight Matilda is a very capable track machine with the right driver behind the wheel.
The Ponton Racer was purchased by SLSHOP to be championed alongside Matilda in historic racing, supported by a team of technicians from SLSHOP. An elegant but rather unusual car, this one has a history in motorsport and is a previous attendee at Goodwood.
Our Donington Day was a chance for a selection of customers and journalists to sample both of these cars during an open track day. Both cars had won awards even before taking a a place on the grid – a solid one-two for ‘oldest cars present’. Despite the age of the vehicles, both cars managed impressed our guests, who enjoyed taking it in turns behind the wheel and as a passenger in each car. Before the day was out there was one more task to be accomplished… SLSHOP founder Sam Bailey drove the last few laps, keen to show the M3s, Civics and 911s and thing or two – which he duly did. Horsepower is no substitute for racing experience, and nothing could pass the 450SL with Sam behind the wheel.
The SLSHOP Open Day
At SLSHOP we are focused on inclusivity, always looking for an opportunity to welcome customers through our doors. Having wanted to host an Open Day since we moved into our new home in Stratford-Upon-Avon, we were finally able to do so in late 2019. Our staff worked tirelessly to prepare for the arrival of guests, and more than 150 people gathered for what was a very enjoyable day. The Ponton and 450SL Race Cars were on hand to offer passenger rides up and down the drive, whilst a program of talks and presentations kept everyone entertained and informed throughout the day. The showroom was open for all to see, as well as giving customers the ability to stroll through the workshops to see the inner workings of SLSHOP. This was an excellent chance for customers to ‘access all areas’, asking questions in the showroom, workshops and parts store and leaving better informed about SLSHOP and the Mercedes-Benz SL. We can’t wait to invite you to the next one.
The Cotswolds SL Tour
The real joy in classic Mercedes-Benz SL ownership comes though sharing the experience, and what better way to indulge in your SL ownership than a tour of the Cotswolds with friends? Our first Cotswold Tour was an opportunity to meet new people, and experience new automotive adventures – we took guests to a skid pan for some adrenaline fuelled action, an optional treat amongst the sight-seeing and relaxing! Ambling through the countryside with the top down, with a long line of SLs trailing in the rear view mirror was an unforgettable experience – we hope to see you on a tour very soon.
Classic Car Shows with SLSHOP
SLSHOP have been attending classic car shows for over a decade, with the number of cars on show and the size of our display changing as our company has grown. Regular customers will of course know Sam, Bruce, Russel, Paul and Jack, and have probably spoken with them at a show or two. Our long term staff members enjoy meeting customers and friends and these shows, a great chance to talk cars and share a coffee in amongst the hubbub of a busy weekend. We’ve even been know to pop a cork and share a glass of fizz as the end to the day approaches. With SLSHOP customers spread all around the country, the big classic car events bring everyone together – we look forward to spending a weekend meeting new SL enthusiasts and getting reacquainted with old customers
Local Event Activity
Our Stratford-Upon-Avon base is a nice and central location, giving access to a wide variety of local events. We have Wheels on Wednesday on the outskirts of Worcester, the Stratford Festival of Motoring, the Malvern Hills Classic Car Show and many more that are always attended by cars from SLSHOP. Whether it’s staff with their own vehicles, project cars or showroom cars, we always try to bring a little slice of classic SL goodness to our local classic car community. Come and say Hello at an event, chat over a coffee and see our cars out in the wild.
Caffeine and Machine
SLSHOP teamed up with the Midlands favourite automotive destination Caffeine and Machine to host a weekend of SL activity. As a special celebration of the SL, we decamped the business for two days and set up shop to celebrate the SL with enthusiasts from around the world. Displayed in the grounds of C&M were some of the finest SLs provided by SLSHOP, including our fully restored Pagoda and a 190SL. We also hosted what we believe to be the world’s first R107 Wheel Change Challenge, which proved a great deal of fun for attendees.
