EXCLUSIVE OVP RELAY FOR MULTIPLE MODELS
With thousands of individual components, some of which were bespoke to the model, there will always be a point in your classic car ownership journey where you may find it difficult to diagnose an issue or replace a failed component. This is because a component is no longer available, previous suppliers have ceased trading or OEM sources have decided the returns are no longer worth the output in production.
Over the years, we have encountered this issue and adapted accordingly – producing our exclusive bulkheads, blower motor fan resistors, cabin heater fans, chrome boot handles and many more components. Admittedly, some are more exciting than others. The topic of this article is a crucial component – one that is essential to the running of your R107. It is small, can be found across multiple model lines and has several functions, which means that its overall contribution to the functionality of your Mercedes-Benz is enormous.
OVP RELAY: WHAT IS IT?
Known technically as Overvoltage Protection Relay, this small but essential control unit works to regulate the flow of current through to your vehicle’s ECU. An example of the OVP in operation is when jump-starting a vehicle – the unit prevents too much energy from surging through to the ECU and thus protects essential systems such as the Idle Control Unit, ABS and Injection System.
SIGNS IT NEEDS REPLACING
We’ve all experienced poor running with our classic cars. The frustration is debilitating. Next time consider your OVP Relay… You may find yourself sitting in a supermarket car park and your vehicle is struggling to start. Perhaps it sparks and runs but as soon as you exceed 2,500 revs, it cuts out. The one recurring sign that owners and our technicians’ report is an illuminated ABS light. If you spot this illuminated on your R107 or Mercedes-Benz from the same era, and are experiencing the above issues, you likely need to replace this relay.
WHERE IS THE OVERVOLT PROTECTION RELAY LOCATED?
The OVP Relay is located amongst your fuses and can be changed at home, with very few tools required. This should take you under five minutes to replace.
A LACK OF REPLACEMENTS:
With over 5,000 R107s alone still on the roads here in the UK, the lack of available OVP Relays is just another hurdle for owners and specialists like SLSHOP to overcome. When considering the compatibility of this OVP Relay with other models (outlined below), the issue stretches even further.
BUT, with our support, you can now replace this component on your roadster, saloon, coupe, or wagon, thanks to our new refurbishment service. We’ve spent months testing and tuning our approach to achieve the best possible outcome. We’ve leaned on our Workshops for this project, using a range of models for testing purposes to ensure longevity, reliability, and factory-correct operation.
A SUSTAINABLE PROCESS:
Our approach with this component has been one of refurbishment. This allows us to utilise as many of the original materials as possible, alleviating stress on the environment as the natural materials don’t need to be sourced or produced.
HOW IT WORKS:
All you must do is send us your component and we’ll supply you with a refurbished example, ready to go and in the original factory correct style and specification. Once received, you can potentially cure the poor running issues at home and in less than five minutes.
WHAT MODELS DOES IT FIT?
R107: 300SL, 420SL, late (1986 onwards) 500SL and 560SL.
W123, W124, W126, W201 as well as 460 & 461 G Wagon.
Part Numbers: A2015400845 / A1265404745
Some R107 models utilise a slightly larger OVP Relay with a minimum of 8 electrical contact points. These have the part number stamped in the casing (as shown below). These are available as new components.
WHY IS IT SIGNIFICANT?
You might not need one now, but when you do, you know who to call…
