In April 1971, volume production of the all-new Mercedes-Benz R107 SL began, a car that would go on to become an automotive icon, a status symbol, a car of inspiration and the poster child of an entire generation. Adored by the rich and famous, the R107 SL would remain in production and in demand for a full 18 years. The final R107 SL rolled off the production line in 1989, almost two decades since the graceful shape first arrived in showrooms.
2021 is an important year for the R107, marking 50 years since the very first cars were built.
Throughout 2021 the Mercedes-Benz SL will enjoy a great deal of media coverage, with a good number of events and occasions planned to celebrate the 50th.
Here at SLSHOP we will be joining in some of the organised celebrations, but of course we have a few of our own… We won’t reveal all of our 50th birthday plans just yet, there will be more on that in due course.
One special 50th birthday present that we can reveal is to do with the Mercedes-Benz museum.
The Mercedes-Benz Museum at Brooklands have launched their R107 SL tribute early; choosing to display a superb example of a Signal Red 300SL.
The car is shown at the entrance to the museum, a fine centrepiece that will be in place throughout 2021. This particular car is one we know very well indeed… It was subject to one of the most extensive and exhaustive restorations we have completed to date. We are honoured that the Mercedes-Benz museum have chosen one of our cars to display, and you can see it for yourself if you visit the excellent attraction.
Take a ‘selfie’ of yourself with the car and post it to our social media feeds, there may well be a 50th Anniversary Surprise for one lucky visitor.
