We wanted to take a moment to give an additional platform to customer and friend Harry Metcalfe, known for his work at EVO magazine and now for his excellent ‘Harry’s Garage’ YouTube channel.
Recently Harry invested a significant amount of time in putting together a video discussing the future of the motorcar, in the context of electric cars and CO2.
The video is linked below and it’s well worth your time. In this video Harry dispels some of the myths around classic cars and electrification, and as a company that has converted a classic car to electric power, we have a few pertinent points to add.
For some of our customers, an electric classic car is the perfect solution. For a built up city, having access to a silent, clean, plug in classic car for occasional use is a dream come true. To have all that classic style and the feeling of a classic car without any of the maintenance issues and costs associated with internal combustion, for some it is perfection… however….
For most of our customers, an electric classic car misses the point on what a classic car is all about. A Classic Car isn’t just the aesthetic, it isn’t just to be looked at and admired, a classic car has to be driven, the visceral feel of pushing your right foot down into the carpet to hear the revs climb in six-cylinder or V8 engine, to hear the throaty note of the exhaust as the car builds momentum, real noise, real vibrations, real physics!
Harry has done an excellent job in distilling the arguments either which way, so do enjoy his video.
As an automotive writer once said:
“Whether you like your classic cars with electric power or fuelled by by the fire created when a perfectly designed and engineered spark plug triggers at a moment accurate to a nanosecond to ignite a small jet of fuel which was pushed into a dark chamber via a tiny hole propelled by a precision instrument built and coordinated to only give an exact amount of liquid, a liquid that will then burn and expand to push a piston to drive a shaft, whilst a perfectly timed valve opens to allow the resulting gases to escape, some of which will be caught in a specially designed chamber to protect the environment whilst others will make it through the manifold, eventually meeting with gases from seven other cylinders and culminating in a rush to get out of the tail pipe at high speed and all the while shouting an incredible din through the resonating back box…
For it’s the noise and the feeling that keep us going… But what do we know? We are all just automotive addicts here.”
Thanks for reading, enjoy the video
