In this four-part mini series on classic car reliability, we are looking at the wider definition of reliability in the context of a classic… And what it means for you as an owner.
Blog Post #2 – Emotional Reliability
Does your classic car constantly put a smile on your face, or do you have a love hate relationship?
Some classic cars can be temperamental and difficult to own, whilst others are easy to live with. Good maintenance can take care of how much stress your car causes you, as we discussed in Blog #1, but when it comes to emotional reliability, is your car consistent in the way it makes you feel?
For some, talking about feelings is difficult, but there is a strongly emotive side of classic car ownership – a love that is buried deep within and connects us to feelings we’ve experienced over the years.
Thinking about your classic car should make you feel warm and gooey inside. Thoughts of getting out on country roads, to visiting your favourite watering holes, and going to your local classic car show should fill you with joy.
We believe that owning a classic car shouldn’t be a battle. Staying on top of routine maintenance (not just of the engine but all moving and functioning components of the car) will decrease the amount of stress that you have for the vehicle, and in theory increase enjoyment.
Most of us have owned cars with which we’ve had a love hate relationship, cars that have us on a pendulum that swings between ‘restore it and cherish it’ and ‘forget it and eBay it’. This is the very opposite of a car bringing you emotional reliability.
Can you love your car; really cherish it for the long term? Is it like a family member, a crucial part of your summer?
Does your car provide the emotional reliability that a long-term investment requires?
If it doesn’t, maybe it’s time we had a chat about improving it, restoring it or even selling it for you… Every now and then we all need to do a mental stock take on the vehicles we have around us.
Perhaps it’s the roof that frustrates you, those small rips and that cut in the side window bring you anguish. Maybe it’s the pitted wood that you stare at during every journey. A finicky gear change, slow starting, hesitant running… There are many small issues that can all add up to affect the way you feel about your classic car.
Ask yourself, is my current classic car (or fleet of classic cars) providing me with joy…? And if it isn’t, what needs to be done to achieve that? Let us help you answer those questions and provide the CARE you and your vehicle deserves.
