Long before the AMG badge appeared on production cars, 4 years before BMW founded the M Division and more than 10 years before Audi Sport came into existence, Mercedes-Benz produced the fastest ever 4 door production saloon car. The rest, as we say, is history.
Rumour has it that Mercedes-Benz engineer Erich Waxenberger was told by a motoring journalist that he was making ‘granny’ cars… He responded by squeezing a mighty 6.3 litre V8 into a car normally powered by an engine half that size.
We have a lot to thank that journalist for. The 300 SEL 6.3 was a masterstroke; a car capable of carrying 5 occupants in comfort at speeds of 124mph, an incredible feat for the 1960s.
While we don’t recommend you try that, experiencing the feel of this mighty machine is a must. The road presence and lumbering power of this car is something to behold, making it the perfect companion for classic motoring events like the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
f you’re a fan of fast German saloon cars of the late 1990s and 2000s, the likes of the Mercedes E55 and E63 AMG, BMW M5 and Audi RS6, then you have Erich Waxenberger to thank!
Arrive in style with ‘the 6.3’.
