Ordered new from Normand Mercedes-Benz LTD (Mayfair) on 27th July 1989, this rare Midnight Blue 300SL has covered just 46,000 miles in 31 years. One of the last cars registered on a G prefix, it boasts an enviable specification sheet.

Back in 1989 the Mercedes-Benz R107 SL was the very definition of the term ‘reassuringly expensive, with a list price of £32,750…. more than half the price of the average house in the same year, which was £56,000 at the time.

In those days ordering a car from a showroom was a more straightforward process, with less options to choose in terms of interior equipment and exterior specification. Buyers had a choice of colour for the paintwork, soft top, hard top and interior, along with 14 optional extras to improve the car in line with the demands of the client.  These were:

Out of the options shown above, this only lacks Metallic Paint (as Midnight Blue is a solid colour), Rear Seats in Cloth or Tex (as these are Leather) and a Tow Bar (we have never yet seen an R107 SL with one!)

The combined options gave this car an on the road price of £39,150, or £103,272 in today’s money. Add the Becker Mexico and Automatic Antenna and that total goes to £40,574 or £107,126.91.

We often calculate the ‘as new’ price for cars that adorn our showroom, and it’s rare to find a 300SL that slides north of £100,000 in equivalent values. This is a very special car indeed.

A detailed box file accompanies the car, complete with a photocopy of the original invoice from the supplying dealer. The documentation for this car would satisfy even the most fastidious librarian, with every piece of paper present since the car was new.

Amongst the wide array of documents and receipts are three interesting sheets, dealing the story of the early years for this car. On 4th June 1990 a TVR 450 SEAC was part exchanged against this 300SL, with the owner keeping it until 1992 when it was once again sold by the same dealer. This time a BMW 535i was part exchanged, with this owner enjoying the car until it was sold again, with another Mercedes-Benz 300SL taken in part exchange. Throughout this time the paperwork was always kept in impeccable order.
