This extremely sharp looking SL has everything going for it, low mileage, exceptional options and condition. This SL was shipped with a host of toys that clearly meant the first owner spared no expense.

When the car passed to a new owner in 1995, a Tracker device was added. Since then, it’s enjoyed a few more long-term owners, who have cared for this stunning SL with an exceptional attention to detail, before being entrusted to us from 2022.

Very few R107s can match this one’s mix of condition, options and history. The car’s colour combination of silver over brown makes it a classy and somewhat standout example we’re confident will impress even the most discerning of classic car fans.

Condition Synopsis:

Some minor work was needed to get this SL fighting fit, including some clearing of drain holes and washer jets, as well as getting some lights working again and adjusting the kick-down. This was all carried out by our team in 2022, before preparing this 420 for sale (see below). The car had been kept in such good order to that point, there was little more than a comprehensive once over to do, before the car was made ready for its next owner. The paintwork presents extremely well with hardly any sign whatsoever of its three-and-a-half-decade vintage. The cabin condition is just as impressive with only very mild creasing to the leather, perfectly in keeping with a very-well-cared-for classic. The hood, dash, chrome and plastics are all near unmarked and present with near-new quality.

History File:

The service booklet shows delivery to its first owner – along with the fitting of a Blaupunkt Toronto stereo at Mercedes-Benz Mayfair in February ’88. The car remained within the dealer network until 1995. Specialist care takes over from 2015, with MOT certificates in between confirming the car’s very limited mileage. All driveline fluids along with engine and coolant were changed at this point by Gidea Park Motors in Romford, the car returning to this independent Mercedes-Benz specialist for near annual check-ups and services until 2020. Once in our care, this SL was taken to the next level. We thoroughly went through it in 2022, refurbishing the wheels, flushing the power steering system, repairing an EGR valve in the exhaust, changing the front subframe bushes and adding some new soft-top tensioner cables before cleaning, treating and undersealing the whole underside of this remarkable SL. It was a labour of love that brought this 420 up to top condition at a cost of £6819.58.

A specification sheet that would make a period Porsche owner jealous, this 420SL boasts a number of creature comfort and drive-enhancing options. A limited-slip differential has been added out back, to better manage the deployment of the 4.2-litre V8’s 215bhp. There’s also the vital long-distance assist of Tempomat cruise control and a dark brown soft-top hood to match that gorgeous Brazil leather trim. The ‘paintwork preservation’ option has done precisely what it set out to, keeping the car’s Smoke Silver exterior gleaming, even 36 years after it was applied. The mechanical components have barely been run in, yet in spite of this, they’ve received recent care and preventative work to ensure this low-mileage SL is ready to be enjoyed right away.
