Graham Laing decided to retire 10 years earlier than planned to enjoy an epic driving tour with his SLC. The plan, inspired by conversations with his Father, was to drive the SLC from the southern most tip of mainland Europe in Spain to the northernmost tip of mainland Europe in Norway.
When he told his children, they said ‘you should write a blog about it’… So that’s exactly what Graham is doing. Graham approached the SLSHOP and asked whether we would be interested in hosting his work, and we were only too happy to share his story. The SLCenic Route was born!
In this episode Graham realises his SLC is more comfortable than a passenger ferry.
The SLCenic Route
Episode 28 – Horten (Norway) to Aalborg (Denmark) via Ferry 110 miles
The summer solstice is a day I look forward to. Feels strange though that this year’s solstice will be shortest day I’ve had in 2 weeks. Wonder if I’ll enjoy it as much in the future after such a brilliant few days in northern Scandinavia with the midnight sun.
One last detour on the way to the ferry to enjoy the Norwegian countryside, smooth roads and the tunnels that really are everywhere. Then a 4 and a half hour boat trip on a sunny afternoon across the Skagerrak (which I had never heard of) to Denmark.
I had already done the Oresund Bridge and thought it would give me a nice break. 20 minutes on the ferry and I’m thinking the Merc seats are much comfier. 40 minutes and I’m sore and need to go for a walk. I would never have reached Punta de Tarifa far less Nordkapp if the SLC seats were this uncomfortable. I walked the boat a dozen times between trying out different seats, so much for giving me a break.
Finally the car decks were opened and I could sit comfortably. Beautiful country farmhouse B&B tonight, the owners love the SLC. After the normal long and friendly chat about where I’ve been and going to, they give me Strawberries and cream with extra homemade ice-cream as a treat. The SLC has many hidden talents!
