For the first four years of its life in production, the eight-cylinder R129 followed its predecessor in name, with the number designation before the ‘Super Leicht’ acronym. This particular 500 SL is one of the finest examples of an early R129 SL we have seen since SLSHOP was conceived, and we are delighted to be able to bring it to market once again.

Exterior:

The contemporary and subtle Pearl Grey (122U) perfectly complements the sharp angular lines of the R129, with the quality of paintwork and contrasting lower panels confirming that the departure from the traditional chrome of the R107 was indeed a necessity. The paint work is in excellent condition with very few signs of the vehicle’s age, which is testament to the care taken to preserve this low mileage roadster.

All the headlight units are clean and without scratches – a point of reassurance for the prospective buyer, as these are difficult replacement parts to find. With the same 15” alloys found on its predecessor, this early R129 retains some classic SL features neatly paired to an extremely capable modern machine.

Inside:

The Anthracite Leather (271A) interior is in beautiful condition, with just the right amount of natural creases to the leather. No rips are present and the double stitching adds to the more contemporary atmosphere inside. A previous owner has fitted an aftermarket head unit to offer more tech options inside, but the original radio can be refitted if desired. All in all, the interior is stupendous, with the centre spine wood still retaining the gloss factory finish.

The R129’s electrics are known for being problematic but our technicians have tested and found no trace of faults throughout the car, using the STAR diagnosis technology created specifically for the R129 back in the 1990s. The electrically adjustable seats, mirrors, roof and windows are all in order; while the anti-theft alarm system and central locking also operates perfectly.

Beneath the bonnet:

The M119 eight-cylinder powerplant fires into action on the button, releasing the sophisticated bellow of these early engines. Our technicians have inspected the mechanicals and transmission, carrying out road tests to ensure the vehicle pulls and stops as it should. With just 66,500 miles driven over the past 30 years, coupled with the dedicated routine of servicing each owner has committed to, this 500 SL could be enjoyed for many years on the road with uninterrupted cruising. Alternatively, this is a car that could be taken to the next level, as a concours or collector’s example.

Accompanying the vehicle is an array of paperwork neatly organised by the current keeper, incorporating invoices dating back almost ten years with specific work carried out by ourselves and other establishments. The most recent service was April 2022, carried out by our technicians.
