A very late car (May 1989) finished in rare Triple Black, an investment grade R107 SL

The Mercedes-Benz R107 SL replaced the W113 Pagoda in 1971, remaining in production almost unchanged a full 18 years, with the final R107 rolling off the production line in 1989. For many SL enthusiasts, the most desirable cars date from the last three years of production. For the 1986 model year, Mercedes-Benz introduced a range of new engines. The 300SL replaced the 280SL, the 420SL replaced the 380SL and only the range topping 500SL remained unchanged in Europe - export markets that were throttled by emissions regulations received the 560SL. Along with the new engines, the 1986 cars received a revised interior, a range of new colours, wider wheels and improved handling and road holding - as well as the well known galvanised construction. This striking ‘Triple Black’ car would have been quite the thing to behold back in 1989, just as it is today. With a list price of £41,700 and options taking this number up to closer to £45,0000, adjusted for inflation this car equates to more than £140,000 in today’s money. Here at SL shop we pride ourselves on finding the rarest R107 examples available, and to date we are only aware of a handful of cars finished in the Triple Black colour scheme - only two of which have been the range topping 500SL.

This car is accompanied by an extensive history file, which details time spent in France between 1998 and 2011. During that time the car was served and maintained before returning to the United Kingdom just over a decade later. Since then it has seen very little use but has continued to be maintained to the highest standards.
