The Mercedes-Benz 420SL was introduced in 1986, available in the R107 SL range until the end of production in 1989. The 420SL replaced the 380SL, which superceded the 350SL in 1976. You can read about this history of this engine in this article.

Compared to the 300SL and 500SL, the 420SL is a rarity. With just over 2,000 built, it was dwarfed in quantity by some 13,500 examples of the 300SLs and almost 20,000 500SLs.

Built in May of 1989 and registered on a ‘G’, this black R107 420SL has been well cared for all of its life. It now shows just over 32,500 miles, and might well be the only 420SL in existence that’s finished in Triple Black – Black paintwork, black leather and a black soft top. A smart colour combination that gives the R107 SL an imposing look on the road. The leather interior with rear seating would have been a cost option, adding some £2,500 to the list price of £41,700, or more than £112,000 in today’s money.

An almost complete MOT history accompanies the car, missing only certificates from 1993, 2007 and 2017. The service book is stamped and up to date, contained within the original manufacturer plastic wallet with the original book packs and service manuals. Three keys accompany the vehicle, completing the picture of a superbly well cared for car of the highest calibre.
