Overview of this Mercedes-Benz
1988 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL (R107)
Pine Green (254) with Beige Leather (275 and Black Fabric Soft Top (9001)
The Mercedes-Benz R107 SL was available in no less than 17 different shades of green, with Pine Green Metallic only available for the final three years of production. It is a very rare colour to find on any SL, let alone a late model V8 with beige leather.
In addition to being a rare colour, this car also boasts air conditioning. This optional extra would have cost the first owner just over £1943, or just over £5100 in today’s money! Add to that the additional £851 of the leather seats, and you end up with a total ‘new’ price of around £44,500 – roughly equivalent to £117,000 today.
This car first arrived at SLSHOP back in 2014 when it was owned by Mr R, a gentleman who wished to use the car for a Scotland road trip. It went through our strangely R107 Health Check and the resulting works were completed ready for the tour of the Highlands. The brief at the time was to make it as good as it could possibly be, ready for the journey.
A few short years later, Mr R approached SLSHOP to sell the car on his behalf. A pre-sale inspection was completed and once again the car attended our workshops to be prepared for the showroom. By this stage the car was mechanically in very good shape, so more attention was paid to the cosmetics. As well as some paintwork, SLSHOP undertook the work to clean down the underneath and repair any corrosion issues, with a full waxoyl to ensure longevity for a future owner. Other works showing in the 9 page history with SLSHOP include (but are not limited to) valve stem seals, gearbox service, new subframe bushes and engine mounts, replacement door mouldings, remove and refit the metering head and refit with new injectors and seals, replace all 8 O rings to exhaust manifold, new distributor cap, spark plugs and HT leads and refurbished air conditioning condenser. A great deal of time, effort and work have gone into this car to ensure it looks and drives as well as it does.
In 2019 SLSHOP sold the car to an Aston Martin enthusiast who had purchased it for his wife. A house move from London to the South West followed, and although the couple were extremely fond of the 500SL, it simply wasn’t being used as they intended. Knowing the car well, we agreed to host it once again in our showroom.
The net result is that here we have a late model, five-litre V8 equipped SL in a desirable dark metallic colour with luxurious contrasting interior.
This car represents an excellent opportunity for someone wishing to enjoy continental cruising in a well cared for and superbly presented V8 SL.
