Back in 1988 a Mercedes-Benz 500SL was more than just a status symbol, it was the pinnacle of fine motoring. Any R107 SL was an expensive investment in those days, with a list price of £41,700 before options. The car shown here took a generous helping from the option list, including Air Conditioning, Leather (with Rear Seats), Heated Front Seats, Outside Air Temperature Gauge and Under shields.

These added a further £4,000 to the list price, giving an equivalent total in today’s money of more than £120,000.

In 2011 ownership of this high specification car fell to an enthusiast, a gent who had owned a string of fine Mercedes-Benz cars. One year into his ownership he embarked on a program of significant improvement, with the engine having some major works including replacement of the timing belt. Cosmetically the car was given a complete restoration, stripped to bare metal and put back together with genuine Mercedes-Benz parts. The Mercedes-Benz Club Gazette Article written by a former keeper proudly proclaims “I am now the proud owner of a classic Mercedes with absolutely no rust or filler in the body, a silky smooth running engine and a totally original interior”.

A print out of this article is present in the history, file which in itself is as comprehensive as the restoration work. A significant file of paperwork accompanies the car, including photos of the work completed and an original manufacturer brochure.
