The Mercedes-Benz 420SL arrived in 1986, introduced for the last three years of R107 SL production. This 4.2 litre naturally aspirated V8 engine replaced the 3.8 litre 380SL, offered alongside the larger 5.0 litre V8 and six-cylinder 3.0 300SL until 1989. Although tens of thousands of 300SL and 500SL examples were produced, 420SL production numbered just 2,148, making it the most elusive of all R107 SL models.
Over on our Journal we have put together a comprehensive rundown on the 420SL engine, including further details on why this engine is such a great choice for the prospective R107 buyer. You can read that here.
The car shown above is a superb example of the 420SL, finished in Willow Green Metallic with Beige Leather. It was owned by one family from 1988 until 2019, when it was sold at auction to the current keeper. The mileage at the time was just 16,923, and it has covered very few miles since then.
Despite the low mileage, the winning bidder at the auction promptly delivered the car to SLSHOP for a full program of recommissioning, lavishing some £14,000 on the car to turn it into the jewel of an SL that it is today.
Present with the car is a comprehensive history file, along with the service book and many invoices pertaining to completed works throughout the life of the car.
Having recently driven back to the SLSHOP from Scotland, this is a superb specimen of a late car, with that silky smooth 4.2 litre engine and in a desirable colour combination. The owner would like to mention that he once covered 664 miles in one day behind the wheel of this car, and it performed faultlessly.
The sort of car that can be used and enjoyed as well as cherished and displayed.

I have followed SLSHOP with interest for some years now and recently took the plunge and purchased my dream car – they did not disappoint!
The whole experience from start to finish was superb. Their communication was excellent and they kept me
informed every step of the way. Thank you and I look forward to my next purchase!

I have just purchased a 280SL from SLSHOP. I have already purchased several parts from SLSHOP and have found all members of staff most helpful and it is more like dealing with a club than a commercial enterprise I would highly recommend using SLSHOP for cars, parts and most importantly impartial advice.

They put up with my indecision, inexperience and last minute demands and my car is the best thing I’ve ever bought. The most impressive thing about them is the after care though. Nothing is ever too much trouble and they’ve given me the best advice to make sure I get the most out of my car. Can you tell I’m obsessed with them all?
