This exceptional car is one third of a small collection of silver coupes commissioned by the current owner. The goal was curate a matching set of iconic Mercedes-Benz coupes, each restored to inch perfect condition by Kienle Automobiltechnik GmbH in Germany – the end result is a trio of incredible cars…. A 1973 Mercedes-Benz 280CE Coupe (W114), 1985 Mercedes-Benz 280CE Coupe (W123) and of course a 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300SL (R107). The cost to build these three cars and create this collection was far more than the stated asking prices. These can be purchased individually, or all three can be secured together as a set. For more photos and information about these cars, please contact Bruce.
In 1988 a Mercedes-Benz R107 300SL left the production line at Sindelfingen, with the sale arranged by the Diplomat and Tourist Sales Department of Mercedes-Benz, paid in full on 16th August of that year. Curiously the car was fitted with everything a diplomat might require to enjoy a fine right-hand drive motorcar in a hot climate, including option codes 343 (cyclone air filter for passage through water), 481 (under shields), 585 (behr air conditioner), 677 (tropical battery), 602 (customs license plate fixture). The cyclone air filter option is not something we have seen often here at SLSHOP, this is a slightly larger air filter housing with a water outlet so any fluids can escape before reaching the filter itself. Despite the preparation for a hard life in the colonies, this 300SL never made it across the water. Instead of being shipped off to a warmer climate, it instead lived a cosseted life here in the UK – accruing just 29,000 miles where the real story begins in 2013.
Purchased from Cheshire Classic Benz for £28,500 eight years ago, this already very good, well cared for, high calibre car was then transported to Germany to be restored by Mercedes-Benz specialists KIENLE Automobiletechnik GMBH. Although the condition of the car was generally good, the new owner was committed to curating a number of Mercedes-Benz coupes and cabriolets to form a small collection of superb cars.
Work commenced to dismantle and rebuild the car to better-than-new condition, diligently undertaken by KIENLE who’s reputation for classic car restoration is superb. The end result is simply wonderful, a car that is inch perfect inside and out with the invoices to prove it – over €100,000 was spent on perfecting this car. The work was completed in Spring of 2015, after which the car was put into storage to be used and enjoyed sparingly alongside the other cars in the collection. Due to an unforeseen change in circumstances, the owner has now decided to part with all three cars as life has taken him in a different direction.
Having taken the time to inspect this car, we can verify the high quality of the workmanship. Underneath the car wants for nothing, having been properly prepared and put together with fresh nuts and bolts throughout. The engine bay is presented not only superbly but correctly, with Bruce highlighting just a handful of minor alterations that would be needed for concours purposes.
Overall this is a fantastic 300SL, one of the very finest we have seen and a chance to buy a virtually brand new 30 year old SL.
