This exceptional car is one third of a small collection of silver coupes commissioned by the current owner. The goal was curate a matching set of iconic Mercedes-Benz coupes, each restored to inch perfect condition by Kienle Automobiltechnik GmbH in Germany – the end result is a trio of incredible cars…. A 1973 Mercedes-Benz 280CE Coupe (W114), 1985 Mercedes-Benz 280CE Coupe (W123) and of course a 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300SL (R107). The cost to build these three cars and create this collection was far more than the stated asking prices. These can be purchased individually, or all three can be secured together as a set. Delivered new to a chartered accountant, the car was first exported to Guernsey. Built to Australian specification, it was equipped with a high capacity battery ready for international use but returned to the UK mainland just years and 7,400km later.
Between 1985 and 2007 the car was laid up due to the declining health of the owner. It was then discovered by a J Little, who acquired it whilst executing the estate. This second owner decommissioned the car with RS Autoservices in Gloucestershire, spending some £2,206 to bring the car back to life. It was then sold on in 2011 to GR Carter Motors, a family run car dealership in Norfolk. It was sold again a year later to a Mr Fiddy of Yarmouth.
In 2012 Neville Green Vehicle Repairs fitted a second hand speedo head that read 22,956 miles, replacing the original unit which read 21,722 miles – the mileage on the speedo is over stated by 1,234 miles.
Contained within the history file is a clipping from June 2014 from Classic and Sports Car, with the mileage and price stated at 24,492 miles and £14,995 at the time. The magazine rated the car as being in excellent condition but requiring minor touch ups, with the interior in near perfect condition.
The current owner purchased the car from Kim Cairns Specialist Cars in May of 2014, intent on turning it into the best W123 280CE in the world. As part of a trio, the car was shipped to Kienle in Germany to undergo a comprehensive restoration and rebuild to factory specification.
Stripped down to the metal and sand blasted, every imperfection was rectified with impeccable attention to detail. The history file indicates that the car was worse than initially thought, which lead to the work taking longer and becoming more involved than was originally envisioned. Once the car was finally ready to ride again, the total invoice for the work undertaken to this 280CE was a staggering €206,000 – hence this is most likely the very best W123 Coupe anywhere in the world.
