1983 Mercedes-Benz R107 280 SL

This beautifully presented, very original, 280SL is a handsome example of the stylish classic roadster. Offered with relatively low mileage it has rare, for its year, Air Conditioning and will be ULEZ compliant from January 2024.

This is a well-presented 280SL that defies its age having begun its life South Africa and spending a number of years in the UK in heated storage but being regularly washed and started. It has evidently been used lightly and clearly during fine weather as a full health check by the SLSHOP showed no evidence of, or need for, chassis or bulkhead repair. The soft top was fitted in 2012 and has hardly been used. The car has recently been recommissioned mechanically and cosmetically; with work undertaken at Mercedes World, Brooklands, the Classic Car Workshop, Dalton on Tees (featured in ‘Bangers and Cash’ TV series), and the SL Shop. Overall, this is an amazing example of a preserved, and mostly original car, that should give the new owner many years of driving pleasure.

Ordered in the UK in ’83, it was imported from South Africa in 1999. Between 2005 and 2015 there’s evidence that maintenance has used genuine Mercedes parts and the MOT’s indicate very low usage with less than 8000 miles being covered in that time. Due to the lack of service history, over the last 2 years the car has undergone a full recommissioning. In August 2021 at Mercedes Benz, Brooklands, it received a good general service and MOT. In addition, it received a new alternator, a new N/S upper control arm and the gear leaver, front subframe and front roll bar bushing was replaced. In October 2022 at the Classic Car Workshop, it received a good general service and MOT. In addition, there were some interior cosmetic issues addressed and perished exhaust hangers replaced. Most recently, since January 2023, it underwent a full SLSHOP heath check followed by a, no expense spared, schedule of works to address all the remaining niggles to get the car ready for sale. This included engine work to address some minor oil leaks, work to the address some minor roof leaks (soft and hard top), and some paint to sort out some blemishes and a small rust spot on the leading edge of the O/S front wing. The car has a brand new set of 205/70VR14 Michelin XWX Tyres.
