Overview of this Mercedes-Benz
1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL – Silver Grey with Black MB Tex
Fantastic, usable 280SL Pagoda with recent engine and gearbox rebuild
As you peruse our Showroom, you can’t help but notice the differing levels of 280SL Pagoda prices. You may be wondering what gives these different tiers of pricing… Well, this comes down to the most minute details, including originality versus restoration – correct colours, precise panel gaps, condition of the chrome, the correct unconcealed location of drainage holes, calibre of replacement components used and much more.
What we have here is a right-hand drive 280SL for under £200,000, sitting at a figure that is extremely competitive when considering how sought after a 280SL Pagoda is in 2022. This is a W113 singing out for a new owner to enjoy and with the paperwork evidencing extremely attentive owners over the years, we can’t see this Pagoda sticking around for a long time.
In the folder are details of the former keepers until the present. The vehicle was owned by Mr Humphries from new up until 1995 when it passed on to a Mr Hodges. From here, it was passed through a handful more owners up, taking it to around nine total owners since 1969. Mr Brown who currently owns the vehicle, acquired it from SLSHOP in 2020, prior to this, the vehicle was used by our Marketing team for various excursions.
Finished in Silver-Grey with Blue MB Tex, the exterior glistens as a sixties icon should. The paintwork is in good condition; more recently the current owner has recommissioned a whole host of major cosmetic elements. These include new chrome bumpers at the front and rear of the vehicle, as well as the front grille chrome surround. Four new period-correct Michelin MXV tires have been fitted, while some mechanical work has been completed including the soda blasting of the inlet manifold and cooling fan.
Present with the vehicle are invoices totalling more than £10,000, spent to revive the cosmetic and mechanical condition of this 280SL Pagoda. This includes labour hours to rebuild the engine and the automatic gearbox, which initially started with an investigation of throttle linkage issues caused by a retro-fitted speaker head unit.
With all these improvement works carried out this year, what we have is a beautifully presented 1969 280SL Automatic Pagoda completely setup to drive and enjoy. Those that have read the Amy Shore article above will know exactly how capable these vehicles are, despite their age.
