A fine opportunity to acquire a quintessential 280SL Pagoda with a favourable mileage, history of dedication by recent long term owner and a stamp of approval from SLSHOP’s Heritage Workshop.

Exterior:

The exterior of this 280SL is painted in a beautiful Sand Beige Metallic (467) colourway which combines brown and gold to offer a blanket of glamour - exactly what a 280SL Pagoda requires. Over the years, the paint has been tended to; with some areas having been repainted in the correct data card colour. Alongside the beautiful paint finish are straight, dent and scratch free glistening chrome bumpers, chrome grille surround and front and rear light clusters. Similarly, the steel hub caps were re-painted in the same Sand Beige finish in 2014, completing the period correct stance of this Pagoda.

Interior:

Possessing its original Black MB Tex (131) interior upholstery, the cabin retains the comfort and sophistication expected of a sixties sports car. The seats are firm and supportive, while the MB Tex (131) has no excessive wear due to its extremely robust composition. As you can see from the images, the MB Tex appears nicely creased with an ‘aged’ look which adds character to the interior. Modifications include an uprated audio capability with functionality for MP3/4 devices to be plugged in to a routed cable that has been concealed under the dash. This can be repositioned to the glovebox to further conceal your device and modern cable. All interior wood is rich in hue and in place as it should be, with no signs of splitting and no stains. The dashboard matches the Sand Beige (467) exterior colour, with no marks or peeling. All dials operate as they should with little to no flickering from the speedo needle. To the rear you’ll find the original tool roll with a selection of tools that would have been aligned in their roll by Stuttgart’s finest engineers and craftsmen back in 1968.

Engine:

As Pagoda experts, we often recommend a specific set of improvements for Pagoda owners to make, namely improved ignition function. A former keeper of this 280SL has already invested in this improvement, choosing to fit a 123 Ignition system to improve reliability and efficiency in all temperatures. This work was carried out in 2020 and includes the fitment of a 123 ignition distributor and high performance 12V coil. As part of our Showroom sales program, all vehicles pass through our Workshop for assessment and setup for their new owner. We can attest that this 280SL Pagoda performs very well indeed and is ready to roll down the road with you at the wheel.

Ownership History: The vehicle was acquired by EA Kingshott in December 1968, residing in Surrey for just 2.5 years before passing on to Mr Herbert Brough of Colwyn Bay, North Wales. Mr Brough owned the vehicle for four years, before handing the keys to David Kempson temporarily (half a year) and taking the vehicle back into his hands for another two years. In 1978 the vehicle was registered to Lanz Hotels up until 1980 when it passes to Paul Rogers of Hampshire. Mr Rogers then sold the vehicle in 1984 via Paradise Garage to Joe Saleem Shashou. Mr Shashou owned the vehicle for 30 years before passing it on to the current owner, Mr Docherty. All in all, this vehicle has only had approximately seven owners including the current owner who has commissioned SLSHOP to sell the vehicle. Works Carried Out: In 2014, Mr Shashou invested over £20,000 in this 280SL Pagoda to rectify some of the issues that had developed over time. This ranged from stripping the vehicle to paint specific sections of the bodywork, fitting new seals, fitment of a new soft top hood, fitment of new period correct carpet. Other works included, replacing the fuel pump for over £400 - this part alone is a considerable amount more in 2023. Also included was an overhaul ofo the brake system and a full service. The total bill was £24,094.29. More recently this 280SL Pagoda has benefitted from a series of focused improvements, including the replacement of subframe, engine and gearbox mounts, as well as rear brake pads, fluids and calipers. This was carried out at a cost of almost £2,000 in 2021. Alongside the vehicle there is a folder of accompanying paperwork detailing servicing and mot work carried out over the past 20 years. Despite being exempt from MOT, the car has continued to receive its time at the MOT centre, showing the dedication of the owners to ensure this Pagoda is safe and usable.
