A lovely and well-kept SL500 with part (recent) Mercedes-Benz service and repair history. This R129 can also boast a number of receipts, cataloguing thousands spent at specialists, since the car returned to the UK mainland (from Jersey) in 2016.

Unrestored and highly original, this SL500 has a number of attractive features and options that make it stand out in a somewhat crowded market – that’s even before mentioning the car’s condition, that belies its near three-decade vintage.

A low-mileage SL500 in original yet excellent condition throughout and with recent large expenditure on big items, this sale represents a rare chance to own an R129 with all the right options, mileage and further big bills likely swerved for the foreseeable. 

Included with the vehicle is the perfect registration plate – ‘ASL 500’!

Condition Synopsis:

As an unrestored, yet cared for example, there’s some very light patina as you’d expect, though none of which we’d go so far as to describe as wear. The cabin shows some light marks and stains to the trim, mainly on the door cards. These are in no way unsightly however, merely indicative of a car that’s survived nearly 30 years on the road. The engine bay appears very dry and tidy with no obvious sign of leaks, either current or ancestral. Plastics have all been treated to a detail and have come up extremely well indeed. Another nice touch is the new under-bonnet insulation that frames that large V8’s home perfectly. Exterior bodywork and trim both look very good with nothing more than some water marks to the front grille worth a mention. This is a very straight and original SL that’s still a real head turner.

History File:

The history that accompanies this SL is mostly complete, though there is a gap of about a decade between 2005 and 2016 where no on-going care is recorded. Though we’ve little doubt it took place, as the car’s condition today shows how attentive its former keepers have been. The service booklet proper shows delivery and annual servicing up to that 2005 threshold. Once back in the UK, there are a stack of invoices (mostly from Mercedes-Benz dealerships) showing extensive on-going care and preventative maintenance. The largest of these bills came from Mercedes-Benz Dartford for a replacement hood control unit and pump in 2017 at a cost of £5115.54. There are several more three- and four-figure bills from the same period, with a further invoice for £4186.01 from Surrey-based d:class automotive for retrim, suspension and hood replacement in 2018.

Highly specified from new, this SL500 remains a comfortable and well-appointed machine. Leather memory seats (with heater function) keep you and your front passenger snug, whatever the weather, while very little ones can also be carried in the rear.    That spec list includes such goodies as; adaptive damping, an auto-dip rear mirror, ESP, plus other more common creature comforts like the central armrest/cubby and lit vanity mirrors. Underneath looks strong and solid, no doubt thanks in part to a Permaguard 5000 coating, given away by a sticker in the driver’s door shut.
