PRINCIPAL FACTS

In February 1971 the W113 generation of Mercedes Benz SL ceased production, bringing the curtain down on a successful run of nearly 50,000 vehicles spanning eight years. By the end of that year, the new R107 generation of SL was in showrooms around the world – stealing the spotlight from a handful of remaining unsold W113’s which were probably giving the dealership managers a headache.

This Pagoda is one of those cars, chassis number 23531 was built at the beginning of 1971, but remained in dealer stock, unsold, until December – probably one of the last Pagodas to be registered in the UK. A rare opportunity presents itself here, then.

HISTORY

Initially delivered to the Mercedes Benz agent in Northampton, this Pagoda was purchased by Derek Ancil, a Jockey who had a successful career in the 50’s and 60’s, including a Gold Cup victory 1960. The car was a gift for his wife, who used it frequently right until her death in 1995.

The car then spent a decade unused, in a barn until a friend of the family estate took the vehicle on and had it professionally restored before passing it on to his son in the late 2000s – that’s where we come in. We were then trusted with the ongoing care and maintenance of this W113, and its sale to the current keeper in 2022 who commissioned a retrim from Cognac MB Tex to Leather, and later a full repaint to Anthracite Grey Metallic.
