Historied example of a top-flight 280SL that’s been through our workshops for restoration as recently as 2018. Still in fabulous order throughout, this Pagoda makes quite an impression. An evocative mix of White (050) exterior paint with a dark brown hardtop and interior make it hard to ignore.  

A three-owner car, the first two holding onto this superb machine for extended periods – first to 1979 and the second from 1979 to 2018. The car graced our doors shortly before the end of that second ownership period, treated to a full-on restoration, a big undertaking but one we relished. 

A stunning 280SL with a classic colour combination, this is one of the prettiest recent additions to our showroom. There’s simply no better time than now to invest in one of these most elegant, yet still useable, classic touring cars. 

Condition Synopsis:

Having had so much spent on its upkeep in recent years, this Pagoda remains looking pin sharp. The lines are just as crisp and knock-out gorgeous as Paul Bracq intended. Panel gaps remain as milimetrically meticulous as the master techs at M-B intended. There’s a reason why these SLs have gained such an envious reputation for quality. The engine bay looks neat and tidy, with original warning stickers that have remained in good order and are easily legible.   Chrome on this car is exceptional, with a highly-reflective shine. We know brown isn’t everyone’s idea of a sexy shade, but the seats and hood fitted to this delectable Pagoda contrast its white exterior divinely. The end result is beyond lovely.   

History File:

The extensive, encyclopaedia-like history that comes with this car kicks off with its original bill of sale and warranty from 1969. A previous owner has helpfully broken the huge pile of invoices down into more manageable yearly folders, with owner changes also noted. The only gap in the history comes after 1979 until 1987.  The car went to Spain in 2002 where it stayed in Malaga until 2013. During this era, it left the predominantly Mercedes-Benz dealer network servicing and maintenance it had enjoyed to that point, before popping up here at SLHOP in 2018, where it received its £21,648.38 of moderate restoration.   Old MoTs, plus that extensive history, prove the car’s relatively low 67k miles. This 280 was warranted by us, post restoration, up to 2020. Other more recent bills include a speedo cable replacement at £408.23 a new fuel pump at a cost of £1610.80 alongside also swapping in a new transmission (rod) and servicing the car once again for £283.59.     

SLSHOP Summary:

Equipment in a 280SL consists of radically advanced mechanical components, rather than creature comforts as we know them. The Pagoda’s fuel-injection system and power steering were well ahead of the curve in the late 1960s. As was its rugged yet powerful range of seven-bearing engines.  That being said, there are a few nods to convenience and safety in this Pagoda, that were roughly a decade or more ahead of becoming standard fit equipment elsewhere. Take that padded wheel centre for example, or the three-point seatbelts; admittedly those were added by us, but the Pagoda came with lap belts from new.  The W113 was also the world’s first sportscar to be built with a deformable front end (more commonly called a crumple zone). This Pagoda naturally enjoys these passive features along with oft-optioned automatic transmission and power steering.
