Bruce's SL CV

Ever since Bruce encountered his first Mercedes (a W124) as a teenager, he was hooked on the three-pointed star. He vowed that one day he’d have a W124 of his own, but it would be more than a decade before the dream came true.

W124 E220 COUPE
Acquired in 1999, Bruce owned his car for seven years, taking to concours standard. It was sold to make way for a 560SEC.
560 SEC
“This was a model of Mercedes that I’d always wanted to own” says Bruce. I gave it a mild restoration, having bought it from an SL Shop customer. Repainted and tidied up, the SEC was sold to make way for the R170 500SL across these pages.
While more recent Mercedes models are generally plentiful, the older cars are all thin on the ground in the UK, so this 1966 Fintail will always be a rarity. Bruce comments “The plan is to sympathetically restore the car then use it as family transport. I’d like to take it to the Goodwood Revival once it’s finished.”
So which Mercedes would Bruce have it his pockets were deep enough? No question, it would be a 300SL Roadster. He comments, “It may be predictable, but the combination of the 300SL’s shape, engineering and performance make this the perfect classic car. But I don’t think I’ll be buying one any time soon with good examples now hovering around the million-pound mark!”
