The iconic Pagoda SL was replaced by the incredibly popular Mercedes R107 range in 1971. At first there was only the V8-powered 350SL with US cars featuring a 4.5-litre engine and European models getting a 3.5-litre unit. By 1973 the larger unit was also offered in Europe, but badged as a 450SL – a year later, the first six-cylinder edition arrived, in the form of the 280SL.

A longer wheel base, hard top coupé SL was launched in 1977, the SLC, offered with an all-new 5-litre V8 and badged 450SLC. Then, in 1980, the SL was face lifted with the all-alloy engine being fitted to the newly introduced 380SL and 500SL. A further facelift in 1986 brought front air dams for all models and a new six-cylinder variant, the 300SL. There was also a 420SL now offered while for US buyers a 560SL was added to the range. In 1989 the final R107 was built, as the R129 made its debut.

Driving

As with the Pagoda, the R107 SL, must be one of the popular and the most recognizable Mercedes convertible's ever. In the 70's and 80's no American big budget soap was complete without the main characters driving around in a Mercedes (R107) SL, just think back to Dallas and Hart to Hart. At Three Pointed Hire you now have the opportunity to live the high life for a day, for a weekend or as long as you like. Our Mercedes 300SL is an excellent example and drives superbly. Fitted with a 3.0 Litre 6 Cyl engine, this car really can pack a punch on the road as there is more than enough power and torque available that you’ll never need any more of either. It's obvious from the discreet styling that this is a wonderfully luxurious car, that really cossets both the driver and passengers alike, which means every journey in our 300SL is a real joy, whether that is a sunday jaunt around sunny country lanes or a long weekend's blast down to Le Mans.

Mercedes 380SL Interior

Don’t be fooled into thinking the 300SL is just a boulevard cruiser, if the need arises, just put your pedal to the metal and the normally subdued 6 cylinder will clear its throat, produce a magnificent growl and blasts you toward the sunset as the tacho needle shoots around the rev counter The R107 really does come into it's own on the sweeping A roads and long distance blasts and with the desirable rear seats and lap belts option our Mercedes 300SL is ideal for the family with young children looking to enjoy the delights of Hiring a Classic Mercedes. Mercedes Classic Hire Gift Vouchers are also available, that allow you the flexibility to hire our Mercedes (R107) SL at a time that is convenient to you, so whether you are old or young, Mercedes Classic Hire has a car for you.

Our 300SL also coms with a host of modern options that will make this classic SL even more desirable to hire....these include a Blue Tooth phone kit, ipod and iphone compatability, it is also fitted with one of the SL shops most popular options a " removable wind delfector". This SL also has remote central locking which enables the car to be armed with the hood up or down.

Testimonial

I’d like to say thank you to Sam and his team for making my mum’s ride in her dream car come true, it was a real pleasure to come across such a professionally run business in this day and age, they looked after us completely from the initial booking to the directions to get there to collect the car. The car was immaculately prepared and ran wonderfully, even though the weather was not the best the day was perfect for her and as I said to Sam “who cares about the rain, the car is the star” ...and it was.
